Getting to know the Spanish Holidays
The Spanish government establishes national holidays every year, although Spanish holidays vary from region to region. While every city celebrates a bank holiday in Spain, regional holidays are set by the local authorities.
Public holidays in Spain that fall on a weekend are sometimes replaced by another day (usually the following Monday) if the regional government so wishes. Recently, however, alternative days are not always given.
Regional Spanish festivals usually coincide with major Spanish festivals and can be an exciting time to visit a Spanish town and taste authentic Spanish cuisine. Many Spanish festivals are world-famous, which means that accommodation fills up quickly, so it is important to book in advance if your trip falls on Spanish bank holidays.
Many companies also close during national and regional holidays in Spain.
